First you should copy the questions below and answer them on a MS Word .doc.  You should create MLA citations for the data so that you can later retrieve it. Focus on obtaining data and images. You MUST CITE any information off of the Internet that is used.

1.)  What is the illicit drug name?

2.)  How serious is it in the U.S.?  Worldwide?

3.) In what forms does the illicit drug come in?  How is it used?

4.)  What are the effects of the drug on the central and/or peripheral nervous system?

5.)  How does the drug act in the body?  How addictive is it compared to other drugs?

6.)  What does recovery from this drug require?

7.)  What research is being done on this drug and its use?

***You need to collect enough data and images to make your movie last 5 minutes!***  These are just the guiding questions that will help you get started.

Drug Possiblities:  Prescription Drugs- OxyCotin, Cocaine and Crack, Ecstacy, Heroin, Pot (Marijuana), Meth, alcohol, or Steroids.  Any other must be approved by me.

1.)  We will begin today by having Jim and then Marcella give their presentations on the respective cranial nerves that they were assigned.

2.)  Next, in the comments of this post you should write a

a.)  1 paragraph summary of what an EMG test is, how it is done, and what it measures.  b.)  Give a hypothesis as to which will generate the greatest amount of voltage- jaw clenching, chewing a marshmallow, chewing a raw carrot, chewing gum, or chewing beef jerky.  Rank order these.

c.)Provide a MLA citation (not a URL) for your research.

3.)  Next you will complete the “Introduction to EMG” experiment with a partner.  Each person must complete their own handout and turn in the images of each “chewing motion”.  You can print to Rm. 203.  Write your name and the chewing motion on the graph.

4.)  If you complete the activity, you should choose an illicit drug ( and the effects of that drug on the nervous system.  You must have your subject approved by Ms. Todd.  You will create a 10 minute movie using Adobe Premiere about the drug and it’s effects.  You will hand in your script for this movie with MLA citations.  Any images used must be cited using MLA citations.

1.)  E-mail re: how your visit went?  Only Cameron answered.  Dur Wed. is a short report in the comments section of this blog.  This is a hw assignment.

2.)  No computer use today in class except by the presenter.

3.)  Last Friday- your .ppts were due for presentation.  Jim, Chase, and Cameron had theirs completed.  Marcella had an extra day (e-mail it to me).  Kayvan where were you on Monday and Friday of last week?  Your .ppt is due on Wed. (this Wed.)

5.) What is an abnormal finding?

In the discussion forum on this website answer the following questions:

1.  If you could be a savant such as Daniel what things in life would be made easier?  What types of things would you like to have “amazing powers” to do? Make sure these are practical items in your current life- not like flying or telekinesis! Write one short paragraph.

You should make sure that you have included the following parts and have an opening screen- saying something like “Human Brain Anatomy”:

Cerebral Cortex

- Frontal, Parietal, Occipital, and Temporal with functions of each

Limbic system

- Hippocampus, Amygdala, and Hypothalamus with functions of each

Central Core

- Thalamus, Pons, Cerebellum, Reticular Formation, and Medulla

You will be evaluated on:

a.) Whether or not you have included each anatomical part above.

b.) Your simulation includes function

c.) You have an opening title screen with your title, name, AMTP, and Neuropsychiatry

d.) You will get additional points for simulation creativity (note that you can make your simulation play music and talk.)

Wed. we will begin studying neurons and then do a brain dissection after analyzing a sheep brain in it’s skull and one that is covered in the dura mater.

We will be studying Emerging Technologies in Neuropsychiatry this trimester by taking a look at both human and veterinary medicine as many of the current techniques were originally developed for animals.

If you took the course last trimester you have no forms to complete.  If you did not take the course last trimester, you will need to complete the following form: amtp_clinical_contract1 This is due by Friday of this week.

Tuesday we will not meet unless we meet virtually using WebEx.  It is essential that you are fulfilling your field component as our Tuesday class period is being “made up” during these mtg. times.

Components:

1.)  A field component

Every student must complete at least three visits not including any Hipaa training to their clinical site.  Your site may or may not be related or may be remotely related to neuropsychiatry but will give you an interesting perspective into clinical medicine.  You should arrange to be at your site for roughly two hours.  Travel time is not included in this two hours.  You should try to arrange all clinical visits to take place on the last Wed. of the month from 1:30-3:10 (our double block). Every time you make a clinical visit you must complete the following form: 0809amtpabsencerequestform1 and have it signed by me, your parents, and Mr. Bondy.  Please cc me on all e-mails to your clinical sponsors and I will do the same.  As your instructor, I need to be “in the loop” at all times regarding your clinical experience and how it is going.  I will be making random visit to sites throughout the trimester.

2.) A lab component

Labs will be completed during the double block period.  You are responsible for actively participating in these labs and completing any assigned work by the end of the class period or the specified time.

3.) A class period component

You are responsible for participating and completing all assigned work during any class period and will be evaluated on it. PowerPoints must be annotated and re-sent back to me via e-mail for class period points (this is not extra credit).

4.) An end of the Trimester Project

A short video documentary of your clinical experience or some aspect of the class is due at the end of the trimester.  This documentary must include a video interview of yourself and if possible, your clinical supervisor.
